We all have our story of how we arrived where we are. Sometimes we wander off the main trail and decide to experience a different course, a different career, and in my case, experience a different movement . . .
Through the years I have had a passion for movement. I was one of those kids that would not sit still too often…always curious. My parents told me they had a feeling I would move away from home to seek new adventures… and I did!
I'm a born and raised Ohio girl that played every sport offered, every dance lesson, gymnastics, piano - all of it. I landed on basketball because of the the competitiveness and perhaps was following the lead of my older brother. Basketball took me to a collegiate level - this formed who I am to this day! Naturally, for my love of sport, I chose athletic training as an undergraduate degree. Connecting with the athletes and rehab were my most favored memories. The wins, the sorrows, the sadness from injury… then the recovery, the joy the win!
After those four years I moved on to graduate school for physical therapy. I wanted more education on movement- following this came Pilates - and on and on. The other part was I also wanted to have a family. As much as I adored the athletic training life, it would've been hard to do that and travel with a team all the time.
Fun Fact: Athletic trainers and physical therapists chose this career because of their own injuries and compassion for the deep connection to “ keep going!”. I've had my fair share of shoulder dislocations, a couple surgeries, and then recovery. There is always recovery. There is always rehab. I have had my share of wrecks on a mountain bike, ski accidents and been hit by line drive/softball.. twice! I learned that the “always rehab” “always recovery” and now “always manage" is a part of life… I try to deliver this mindset with my clients.
It would be an honor to watch you go through the process of healing your mind and body. As with any healing, it is not only physical , but psychological and emotional. I will take the time to listen and develop strategies for a successful approach in moving forward. Some have fear of another injury, another fall, another setback or another missed game… There is always rehab.. there is recovery… and it will always need to be manage.
Remember, that creating different movement patterns takes time, healing and patience. You will be independent, empowered and make choices with your care. Give yourself some grace and maintain Fortitude with the process and progress will occur!
